Explore Christianity

Christianity is one of the most examined belief systems in human history — and also one of the most misunderstood. This page is a starting point for honest exploration, without pressure and without pretence.

Jesus of Nazareth was a first-century Jewish teacher who lived in Roman-occupied Palestine. Christians believe he was not only a teacher but the Son of God — fully human and fully divine — who died on a cross and rose from the dead. His life, death, and resurrection are the centre of Christian faith. The primary sources for his life are the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

The word ‘gospel’ means ‘good news.’ The Christian Gospel is this: that God, out of love, entered human history in the person of Jesus Christ; that Jesus lived a perfect life, died in place of sinful humanity, and rose again; and that through faith in him, any person can be forgiven, reconciled to God, and given new life. It is not primarily a set of rules to follow, but a relationship to enter.

The Bible is a collection of 66 books written over roughly 1,500 years by dozens of authors. Christians believe it is the inspired Word of God — that its human authors wrote under divine guidance. It contains history, poetry, prophecy, letters, and narrative. The Old Testament covers the story of God and Israel before Christ; the New Testament covers the life of Jesus and the early church. A good starting point for new readers is the Gospel of John.

Yes. Doubt is not the opposite of faith — it is often the beginning of a more honest one. The Bible itself contains figures who wrestled deeply with God: Job, the Psalms, Thomas, and others. Bringing your doubts honestly to God is not a sign of weak faith. Many thoughtful Christians have found that sitting with hard questions, rather than suppressing them, leads to a deeper and more durable trust.

There is no formal process required. Many people begin simply by reading one of the Gospels — the book of John is a natural starting point. Others begin with prayer, even uncertain prayer: ‘God, if you are real, show me.’ If you have questions, you are welcome to write to us at [email protected].
